Gray, the 16-year-old brother of Camping World Truck Series driver Tanner Gray, drives for David Gilliland Racing and was scheduled to make his first Truck Series start next week at Richmond (Va.) Raceway, but that has now been put on hold.
The accident occurred in Statesville, N.C., according to a press release from his team.
Sources confirmed to Motorsport.com that Gray and a female passenger were transported to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C., where both remained Thursday.
DGR issued an update Thursday evening which said Gray underwent surgery to address a fractured L4 vertebra. He will also undergo additional surgery in the coming days for a fractured left foot and ankle.
Gray is expected to make a full recovery, the team said.
There was no information provided about Gray’s passenger or her condition.
DGR has decided to withdraw Gray’s entry in next weekend’s Truck Series race at Richmond.
Gray won his first NASCAR race last season, taking the checkered flag in the ARCA West race at Bakersfield, Calif. He has made two ARCA East, one ARCA West and one ARCA Menards Series starts this season.
His best finishes this year have been a pair of third-place finishes at New Smyrna, Fla., and Pensacola, Fla.
